City hosts open house for Hennepin Downtown Street Reconstruction Project

Hennepin Avenue in downtown Minneapolis is in need of reconstruction, and the City would like to hear your thoughts on how the new street should look and function.

The Hennepin Downtown Street Reconstruction Project will reconstruct the roadway from Washington Avenue to 12th Street. City staff is in the preliminary stages of planning and design and would like to talk about current plans and hear from people who use the busy street.

Hennepin Downtown Street Reconstruction Project open house
4-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22
Hennepin Theatre Trust, 900 Hennepin Ave.

At the open house, City staff will share information on the project, the design process, the reconstruction schedule and the next steps. People who live, work and travel in the area will have an opportunity to share their priorities, concerns, and preferences for Hennepin Avenue as well as how they’d like the street to be from the Sculpture Garden to the Mississippi River.

The improved street design will build off corridor planning work and engagement that occurred in 2016 and continue to accommodate multiple travel modes within the existing right-of-way, including:

  • Sidewalk space to support high volumes of people walking and room for plantings and street furnishings.
  • One-way bikeways behind the curb and separated from motor vehicles.
  • Space for enhanced transit stops compatible with future arterial bus rapid transit service
  • Generally, four vehicle lanes, with Hennepin Avenue remaining a two-way street

All are welcome, and children’s activities will also be provided. Project staff will be available to receive input and answer questions. No formal presentation will be given and attendees are welcome to come and go at any time between 4-7 p.m.
