MnDOT is closing the Franklin Avenue Bridge over I-35W early morning Monday, Sept. 18 for reconstruction. The bridge will remain closed to motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists through mid-2018. View the Franklin Ave. bridge detour map for motorists and pedestrian detour routes.
When crews begin demolition of the bridge, there’ll be lane restrictions and weekend closures on I-35W. The first weekend closure of both directions of I-35W between Highway 62 and I-94 is tentatively scheduled for 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29 through 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 2. The second weekend closure of I-35W is tentatively scheduled for 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6 through 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 9.
MnDOT crews will be working 24 hours a day during these weekend closures. Residents should anticipate construction noise, lights and vibration during the night.
The bridge closure is part of the 35W@94: Downtown to Crosstown project, a four-year reconstruction project of I-35W between 43rd Street and downtown Minneapolis. The project will improve accessibility, safety and mobility in the project area including better access to the Lake Street business district and transit service on I-35W and Lake Street. Work is expected to be complete in fall 2021.
