Update on Franklin/Portland bridge closures

Here’s the latest update from MnDOT on the 35W@94: Downtown to Crosstown Project

Lane closures

Northbound I-35W and westbound I-94

Nightly lane closures will occur next week:

  • Beginning Tuesday, Sept 5,  northbound I-35W will have lane closures under the Franklin Avenue bridge through Thursday, Sept. 7.
  • Beginning Wednesday, Sept. 6, westbound I-94 will have lane closures between Chicago and Portland avenues through Friday, Sept. 8.

Portland Avenue

Vehicle and bicycle traffic on Portland Avenue between 15th and 19th streets will be reduced to a single lane on Thursday, Sept. 7 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and again on Friday, Sept. 8 beginning at 7 a.m. through Saturday, Sept 9.

Bridge Closures

Franklin Avenue Bridge

The Franklin Avenue bridge over I-35W is tentatively scheduled to close for reconstruction on Monday, Sept. 18 and remain closed through mid-2018. Detour route and additional information will be sent out in advance of the closure.

Portland Avenue Bridge

The Portland Avenue bridge over I-94 and I-35W is anticipated to close for pier work in late September for two months.

Road closures

Fifth Avenue South 

The block of Fifth Avenue South between Franklin Avenue and East 19th Street is closed as crews conduct pavement removal, tree and brush clearing and utility work.

Fourth Avenue South 

The block of 4th Avenue South between Franklin Avenue and East 18th Street is closed as crews conduct pavement removal and utility work.

Ramp closures

The ramp from Fifth Avenue South to northbound I-35W and eastbound I-94 is closed. Access to eastbound I-94 will reopen in 2018. Access to northbound I-35W remains closed through 2021. Visit the project website for detour information.

More about this project

The 35W@94: Downtown to Crosstown project is a four-year reconstruction project of I-35W between 42nd Street and downtown Minneapolis. The project will improve accessibility, safety and mobility in the project area including better access to the Lake Street business district and transit service on I-35W and Lake Street.
