The City Council voted today to authorize City staff to enter into a funding agreement with the Minnesota Super Bowl LII Host Committee for additional City services for 2018 Super Bowl events.
The Host Committee will be reimbursing the City for services above and beyond what’s normally included in department budgets. Super Bowl LII is scheduled for Feb. 4, 2018 in U.S. Bank Stadium. There will be 15 Super Bowl events and many private events Jan. 26-Feb. 5. The estimated City costs to be reimbursed by the Host Committee will be approximately $4.89 million.
The City Council also authorized the Minneapolis Police Department to enter into a joint powers agreement with other law enforcement agencies to provide for security needs during the 10 days of Super Bowl festivities. The MPD will be the lead law enforcement agency for all Super Bowl related events and activities. The funding agreement with the Host Committee will fund these law enforcement costs.
The agreement requires the Host Committee to pay the City in three installments by Jan. 15, 2018. It also requires the Host Committee to pay for police liability insurance for law enforcement officers utilized under the joint powers agreement. Additionally, it authorizes City staff to amend the agreement to allow the Host Committee to pay for additional City costs for parking, transportation, change orders and contingencies.
Super Bowl LII will put Minneapolis on a world stage and spotlight the city’s outstanding amenities. An estimated 125,000 people will travel to the Twin Cities for the festivities and 1 million is the anticipated attendance for the game and related festivities.
