WHAT: Dedication of the Minneapolis City Hall/Hennepin County Courthouse clock, which has undergone a significant restoration. Hennepin County and City officials will have a program in the rotunda followed by a lighting ceremony of the newly renovated clock faces. Board members of the Municipal Building Commission will also be in attendance.
WHEN: 7:45 p.m. Monday, April 24 (brief program in City Hall/Courthouse rotunda followed by the lighting ceremony)
WHERE: City Hall/Courthouse rotunda, 350 S. Fifth St. (Fourth Street side), for a brief program followed by the lighting of the clock faces viewed from the U.S. Courthouse plaza across Fourth Street from City Hall.
MORE: The clock restoration work included replacing the white clock faces with glass similar to what the clock had when first built more than a century ago. The clock’s steel framing has been replaced with cast aluminum and neon lighting replaced with historically accurate backlighting. The clock faces measure 24 feet 4 inches in diameter — making it the largest, four-faced chiming clock in the world. The clock bells will play after the lighting of the clock face. Pieces of the old ceramic clock faces are also available for interested artists.
